The Government has published the NHS Long Term Plan to improve the quality of patient care and health outcomes in England. The Prime Minister has said that the plan will provide both the certainty and long-term direction needed to transform patient care and secure the future of the NHS.
Specific to oral health and dentistry, the plan includes commitments to upgrade NHS support for good oral health for all care home residents who would benefit, with the Enhanced Health in Care Homes to be rolled out over the coming decade. The plan also pledges to ensure children with learning disabilities have dental services included in general screening services and are supported by easily accessible, ongoing care. Moreover, the plan states that all boys aged 12 and 13 will be offered vaccination against HPV-related diseases, such as oral and throat cancer.
To help prevent tooth decay, currently experienced by a quarter of England’s five-year-olds, the NHS will support 24,000 dentists across England to see more children from a young age to form good oral health habits.
