The Care Quality Commission has published its State of Care report for 2017/18 and highlights the fact that 90% of dental services are meeting regulations and delivering safe, effective care.
1,336 practices were inspected, with just 118 requiring some action to improve, and 17 requiring enforcement action. According to the report, ‘The main triggers of enforcement action were usually poor leadership cultures in practices, an unwillingness or inability to take prompt and decisive action to address issues, and a failure to act when things have gone wrong.’
The report also highlights that ‘An effective practice will provide preventative care. There has been steady overall improvement in the oral health of children over many years.’ The inspections revealed notable examples of dental practices ‘where practice teams have used innovative ways to target children and prevent dental disease.’
