Under the government’s plans to introduce calorie counts on menus of all food outlets across the UK, the Department of Health has opened a public consultation on how to introduce this type of labelling.
With evidence showing that overweight children are more likely to become overweight adults who are then at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, strokes, heart disease and certain cancers, this is part of a wider strategy to halve childhood obesity by 2030.
Introducing consistent labelling can help people to make more informed choices when dining out and views are being sought on how to apply these changes to:
- small businesses
- street vendors
- restaurants with fast-changing menus
- online takeaway businesses
