Bridgework
|
A bridge is used to replace one or several
missing teeth. It is usually constructed by
fitting crowns (caps) to the teeth on
either side of the gap, thereby bridging it. A bridge not
only replaces missing teeth, it also supports the
adjacent teeth. If a gap is left, it can be unsightly and the teeth
on either side can tip into it over time, causing problems with
the bite and even gum disease. Whilst dentures can be used
to replace missing teeth, bridges are usually a much better
option since dentures can hasten the loss of the remaining
natural teeth and you have to remove them at night.

Crowns
|
A post crown is used when a tooth has been root-filled and
the remaining part of the tooth is too brittle to support a
crown on its own.The dentist prepares the tooth to take a
post. Once cemented, the post provides the support to hold
the crown securely in place.
Various types of post can be used depending upon individual
circumstances. Either prefabricated and fitted at the first
appointment or, alternatively, made from cast material such as
gold and fitted at the second appointment. Your dentist will
recommend the most suitable post.

Your New Dentures
|
Everyone will have a different experience with their new
dentures and whilst some people may get used to them very
quickly, others may take a little longer. Although the time
period varies almost everyone gets used to them relatively
quickly, even though it might not seem so at first. It is often
helpful to use a denture fixative for the first few weeks.
There is a certain 'knack' to learning to chew with new
dentures. Initially you can try cutting your food into smaller
pieces than usual and chewing on both sides of your mouth
at the same time.

Dermal Fillers
|
Dermal fillers are non-surgical cosmetic treatments used to bring
a more youthful appearance by restoring volume or fullness to
the face and lips. They work by reducing or eliminating lines,
wrinkles and folds in the skin and the effect is seen immediately
after treatment.
As skin ages, both naturally and because of other factors such as
sun damage, smoking, and poor diet, we lose collagen, fat and
other natural moisturising substances from our skin. These can be
thought of as the natural 'scaffolding' that keeps it looking young
and feeling firm.

Preventing Gum Disease
|
Gum disease is defined as inflammation of the tissues that
support the teeth. The effect of this inflammation, over a
period of time, is to cause the gums to recede. Recession
occurs not only on the outside but also invisibly on the inside
where the gum meets the tooth. In this way recession can
cause pockets to develop between the teeth and gums.
Once pockets develop, bacteria accumulate inside them
and accelerate the disease process. Diseased or inflamed
gums bleed when they are brushed or flossed. Healthy gums
do not bleed.

Dental Hygiene Treatment
|
As well as polishing children's teeth and applying fluoride gels,
hygienists can put 'fissure sealants' in children's back teeth. This
sealant is a tooth-coloured plastic coating, which forms a
smooth, protective barrier over the fissures in the teeth, it is
highly effective for preventing decay. Children will also benefit
from an education session with the hygienist who will teach
them about the effects of eating sugar or consuming fizzy
drinks and teach a routine for proper mouth care at home.

Dental Implants
|
An implant is an artificial tooth consisting of a
root and a natural looking replacement tooth.
The root is made of titanium, which is placed
within the gum to form a secure foundation.
The replacement tooth is made of porcelain, or
a special plastic (sometimes on a metal base) and it is fitted
on top of the titanium root. Sometimes the titanium root is
used to anchor a denture firmly in place. Implants are used to replace
a missing tooth, or to replace a tooth that needs extraction.
If a gap is left from a missing tooth, not only can it be unsightly
but the teeth on either side can tip into it over time,

Root Canal Treatment
|
It is generally thought that root treated teeth are not as
strong as normal ones. Whether this will necessitate further
treatment to strengthen the tooth will depend upon its
position in the mouth and the amount of damage or decay
that led to the root canal treatment in the first place.Your
dentist will advise whether it is necessary to have a crown
or other restoration fitted for extra strength.
Root canal (or endodontic) treatment is needed when the pulp
becomes affected by decay or trauma. In these situations, it can
become infected leading to inflammation and pain.

Tooth Whitening
|
The techniques of tooth whitening have been extensively
researched and it has been found that a typical course of
treatment has the same effect on the teeth as drinking one glass
of cola, however there have been no studies that investigate the
long-term use of these products. Sensitivity during treatment or
for a few days after is the most frequently reported side effect.
If this happens it usually disappears of its own accord soon after
the treatment has stopped, and can be eased by using a sensitive
toothpaste or a fluoride mouthwash.

Porcelain Veneers
|
If you are planning to have a number of veneers the dentist
may decide to make a model of the teeth, showing the
proposed veneers, made from tooth-coloured wax. This gives
you the chance to see how veneers will look before treatment
starts and it provides the dentist with the opportunity to
calculate the best shape and tooth preparation needed. There
is usually an additional cost for the diagnostic wax up and the
dentist will give you a written estimate and a treatment plan
before treatment starts.

Wrinkle Reduction with Botulinum Toxin Type A
|
In a small number of cases there may be some localised
bruising, slight swelling, or redness at the site of the injection.
This usually disappears very quickly and can respond to the
application of a cool pack to the area. A temporary drooping
eyelid has also occurred in some patients. See the
manufacturer's information for rare side effects.
Botulinum has been used in thousands of patients over the
last fifteen years. It is made in a controlled laboratory
environment, highly purified, and administered in tiny
quantities.
